In 2007, she accepted the role of Director, Veterinary Medicine at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals where she had a global reach. After two years, she returned to Pennsylvania and over the next 15 years, accepted roles of increased responsibility at Johnson & Johnson. After her comparative medicine training, she relocated to Ann Arbor MI where she was employed as a clinical veterinarian for Parke-Davis/Warner Lambert. That fall, she moved to Pennsylvania and completed a 3-year post-doctoral training program at SmithKline Beecham Labs. Upon graduation from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine, she completed an internship in orthopedic research at Emory School of Medicine, and spent a summer at the Atlanta Humane Society working as a clinician and emergency veterinarian on their premises. Recently, I earned my MBA from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business in the Global Executive MBA Program (GEMBA). In addition to biomedical skills and knowledge, I have an avid interest in finance and management, specifically involving the healthcare sector, medical quality, and leadership development. After completing an internship, I was appointed as an anatomic pathology resident at Michigan State University (MSU) College of Veterinary Medicine and Diagnostic Center for Animal and Population Health and was a National Institutes of Health post-doctoral fellow in human cancer research in the Carcinogenesis Laboratory in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. By training, I am a veterinary pathologist with extensive experience in comparative medicine and translational sciences. My career focus and objective is to serve as an executive health scientist, leveraging my experiences as a veterinarian and pathologist with leadership and organizational development opportunities.
She is also the chair of the first ever Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP). She has also founded the Swine, Aquaculture and Poultry Food Animal Club and served in many roles in the board of directors and diversity and inclusion, education, and membership committees of the AAAP.Ĭurrently, Valerie is a poultry veterinarian in North and South Carolina. During her time at UGA, Valerie served on the executive board of the national and University of Georgia’s chapter of Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment (VOICE) for six years. Valerie’s PhD focused on vaccination strategies for Newcastle disease. Valerie received a Bachelor of Science at Cornell University, and her DVM and PhD degrees from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 20, respectively. Valerie Marcano is the co-founder of Pawsibilities, a nonprofit that aims to increase recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups to the veterinary profession.
